Final PHASE OF ELD IMPLEMENTATION One year away

December 14, 2018

On December 16, 2019, all motor carriers presently using an Automatic On-Board Recording Devices (AOBRD) that were "grandfathered" in prior to December 18, 2017, must switch over to an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

An ELD is not the same as an AOBRD, as the technical specifications are quite different in regards to how the devices capture and provide data.

Some manufacturers of AOBRDs have devices capable of becoming ELDs through software updates instead of requiring that new hardware be purchased. These updated devices must be self-certified and registered by the manufacturers on the FMCSA ELD registration page.

TCS recommends updating or upgrading devices to ELDs sooner rather than later. It is anticipated that there will be issues with the transition, similar to what was experienced prior to Phase 2 of the ELD Implementation on December 18, 2017.
